The 12-Point Data Maturity Checklist Every SME Should Run This Quarter
Aug 12, 2026 · 7 min read
Most SMEs don't actually have a data problem. They have a data trust problem — three people in the same meeting quoting three different revenue numbers, each pulled from a different spreadsheet, each technically "correct" as of whenever it was last updated.
Before we touch a single dashboard or model with a new client, we run the same 12-point self-assessment internally. You can run it yourself this quarter, no consultant required, and it'll tell you exactly where to focus first.
1–3: Source of truth
- Can any two people in your company pull the same number for last month's revenue, independently, and get the same answer?
- Is there a single system each department trusts, or does everyone keep a "shadow spreadsheet" just in case?
- When numbers disagree, is there a documented process for which source wins?
4–6: Pipeline health
- Is data updated automatically, or does someone manually export and re-upload it on a schedule?
- If that person went on leave tomorrow, would reporting break?
- Do you know the last time a data pipeline silently failed without anyone noticing?
7–9: Governance and access
- Can you say precisely who has access to sensitive customer or financial data, and why?
- Is there a data retention policy, or does everything just accumulate indefinitely?
- Would you pass a basic data audit if a customer or partner asked for one tomorrow?
10–12: Decision-readiness
- Can leadership see this month's numbers today, or only after month-end close?
- Is there at least one predictive metric (churn risk, demand forecast, etc.) informing decisions, or is everything backward-looking?
- If you tried to build an AI model tomorrow, is there enough clean historical data to train it on?
If you scored below 8 out of 12, the fix usually isn't a new dashboard or a flashy AI pilot — it's the pipeline underneath. That's exactly the Audit stage of our process, and it's where every engagement should start.
